PRESS RELEASE October 20 2014

WATER SUPERSTORE, IN COLLABERATION WITH THE NIAGARA SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE (NSI), IS VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE ITS RECENT VOLUNTARY COMMITTMENT TO REDUCE ITS CARBON EMISSIONS FROM BUSINESS ACTIVITY BY 20% OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS!

Since 2011, Water Superstore has been a monitoring member with Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI), a regional environmental non-profit organization assisting the business community in measuring and managing their environmental impact. For the last three years they have been working with NSI, using sophisticated carbon-reporting software to track their carbon emissions. "It has been a real learning curve for us as a business and an eye opener to visually see where we can have the greatest impact on the environment" says Laura MacDonell, owner of Water Superstore.

Water Superstore is the first privately owned organization to commit to a carbon reduction goal under the guidance of NSI. "Not only is reducing our emissions good for the environment, but ingraining sustainability into our corporate culture helps us to make good business decisions that make sense financially while feeling good about what we do", explains Laura. " We love being partnered with such an energetic, positive organization that has gone over and above to educate our staff and provide valuable training seminars that help us understand how we can easily make a difference everyday!"

Water Superstore has already begun to make changes in their organization and have discovered that even the smallest changes have such a huge impact. "Large financial investments are not necessarily needed to improve your organizations carbon footprint", says Laura. Adding proper weather stripping to exterior doors, optimizing delivery routes and keeping vehicles properly tuned up are just few things that can be implemented right now. The staff at Water Superstore have also come up with some great ideas, such as turning the heat down in winter and hosting an ugly sweater day to stay toasty warm.

"It is such an exciting time for us and with our staff being so engaged and supportive we know that this is just the tip of the ice burg (no pun intended) of great ideas to come" says Laura.

"As the first privately owned company to commit to a greenhouse gas reduction target, Water Superstore is a leader in the Niagara business community" says NSI's Program Manager, Lila Karolak. "We believe that with their dedication to the environment and both behavioural and structural modifications, Water Superstore will be able to meet their 10 year reduction target, while experiencing the added benefits of engaged employees, energy cost savings and a stronger brand."
