Far Infrared Sauna Tips

Enjoying your far infrared sauna is easy - if you do it right. There are a few things you should avoid when using any kind of sauna. These tips will help you have a safe and enjoyable sauna experience.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol or medications prior to entering the sauna.

  • Take off all metal objects. Yes, this includes all your jewellery - including rings, earrings and other external metal ornaments.

  • Remove your contact lenses. Saunas are a dry environment so you risk having lens problems if you use them in the sauna.

  • Hydrate! You're going to sweat in the sauna - that's the point - so you want to stay hydrated during your session. Drink before and after your session - or even during if it's a long one.

  • Bring Towels. If you're in a public sauna, you'll need to wrap yourself in one anyway. If you have a home sauna, you can sit on a towel or two to absorb sweat. Saunas were designed to be used without clothing but you can wear what you wish at home.

  • Avoid skin lotion and oils. These block pores and limit sweating which defeats the purpose of the sauna.

  • Warm up your sauna before entering. Most people allow 10~20 minutes for the sauna to reach a higher temperature before they enter. You can use the sauna from room temperature but you'll have to spend longer in it while it reaches the higher temperatures necessary for proper sweating.

  • Cool down before showing. You'll continue to sweat if you go from a hot sauna to a hot shower and you'll leave some of the expelled toxins on your skin.

  • Talk to your doctor to make sure you have no health conditions that would be aggravated or worsened by sauna use.
