It’s September and I feel like taking a big exhale. Whew, it’s been quite a year with a roller coaster of change these last few months. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been in state of flux this entire summer. There’s a lot of uncertainty with school and how things will end up this year for my 12 and 15 year old. One’s in high school and the other's in elementary, so two completely different schedules.
But, what I do know for sure is how important it is to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Starting one new healthy habit that will significantly improve your immune system response is so important, now more than ever.
September is a great time to begin or restart a new healthy habit.
30 days is all it takes to re-wire your brain to create a new habit
There are many things you can do but I like to focus on one very simple habit. You may have guessed it and maybe I’m a bit biased but here it is ….
Drink more clean water
Drinking clean water will support your immune response and as a bonus, give you more energy.
Here’s how:
1. Water oxygenates your blood and flushes toxins
Water aids your kidneys in flushing toxins from your body. It also allows your cells to take in nutrients and to expel waste. Toxins will build up in your cells if you don’t drink enough water, thereby inhibiting immune function.
2. Water helps in the production of lymph
Lymph is used to circulate white blood cells and nutrients to all of the body’s tissues. It also removes toxins from the blood. The more water you drink the more lymph is produced. That means better cirulation and distribution of white blood cells that fight infection.
3. Water keeps your eyes and mouth clean and moist
When the eyes and mouth are moist they are more able to repel dust and parasites that could carry infection.
4. Water helps you digest your food
Adequate nutrition is important to maintain a strong immune system. Drinking enough water keeps your digestive system strong so you can properly digest your food. With a strong digestive system your cells are more able to get adequate nutrition from your blood.
5. Water prevents and treats common chronic ailments
Drinking 8-10 glasses of clean water daily can improve and help prevent:
- Arthritis and joint problems: water assists in lubricating your joints
- Depression: adequate amounts of water assists in the production of serotonin, a chemical in the
brain that helps regulate mood. The more water you drink the happier you'll feel.
- Insomnia- water assists in producing melatonin, a hormone naturally made by the brain that helps
calm your body to get you ready for sleep
So go do it now!
Get yourself a fresh, clean drink of water and committ to sticking with it.
8 Glasses a day... I know you can do it :) Your body will thank you.
