The Value of Connection
The last 2 weeks of summer have not gone according to my plan. I have been off sick with an unusual infection and have been told to stay home and rest. When the doctor told me this, I have to admit, it made me a bit crazy.
Like you, I'm a busy person and let's face it there is a lot to do before the kiddos go back to school. From registrations, to orientations to back to school shopping. Not to mention all the responsibilities at work. How could I be off for 2 weeks?
Easy right? Well not really.
It's never been easy for me to ask for help. I have always been the organizer, the doer, the get things accomplished, be productive to have worth kind of person. And here's the thing, WE ALL need help at some point in our lives. While spending many hours at the hospital I witnessed over and over again, at the most basic level, humans helping humans. This is what grounds us in reality and connects us to our humanity.
There's always a bigger lesson in the struggle and sometimes we are on the receiving end of support and sometimes we are on the giving end. It's these moments that build compassion. It's in the trying times that we become witness to our connection with others.
We are all here doing our best, showing up, falling down and getting back up. Rely on others when you need to and be the supporter when you can.
I’ll be happy to be back at work on Tuesday and the kids will hopefully be excited to start school. We’ll be somewhat back to normal, with a little more compassion in our hearts.
