"Can Showering in Chlorinated Water Be Harmful to Your Health?"

1 Shower in Chlorinated Water = Drinking 8 Glasses of Chlorinated Water

When you shower in chlorinated water, the chlorine is absorbed directly into your skin and is also vaporized and inhaled into your lungs. This allows a direct pathway for chlorine to enter your bloodstream. When you drink chlorinated tap water, the toxins are partially filtered out by your kidneys and digestive system.

A warm shower opens up the pores of your skin and allows for accelerated absorption of chlorine and other chemicals from the water directly into your body.

Additionally, the steam you inhale while showering can contain up to 50 times the level of chemicals than tap water, due to the fact that chlorine and most other contaminants vaporize much faster and at a lower temperature than water. The chlorine vapors are known to be a strong irritant to the sensitive tissue and bronchial passages inside our lungs, hence why it was used as a chemical weapon in World War II.

How does chlorine exposure affect you and your health?

  1. The inhalation of chlorine is a suspected contributor to asthma and bronchitis, especially in children, which has increased 300% in the last two decades.

  2. When chlorine enters the body as a result of breathing, swallowing, or skin contact, it reacts with water to produce acids. The acids are corrosive and damage healthy cells in the body on contact.

  3. Bladder and rectal cancer: A 1995 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives implicated the THM byproducts of water chlorination in bladder and rectal cancer — potentially accounting for 8,000 cases of rectal cancer and 5,000 cases of bladder cancer in the United States every year.

  4. Skin Irritation: Bathing/showering in chlorinated water can irritate skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, and also leads to dry itchy skin conditions.

Some effects of showering and drinking water that contains chlorine will show up immediately, (ex skin eye, nose irritation), while others may be long term (carcinogenic links to cancers, asthma, bronchial damage). What is most important is removing the chlorine from not only your drinking water, but from your shower/bath water as well.
